Welsh student

Welsh students are not just students from Wales. Your nationality is important but is not the only consideration. You're a Welsh student if you're any of the following:

  • a UK national or Irish citizen and been living in UK and Islands for 3 years before the first day of the first year of your course
  • have been granted settled status and been living in UK and Islands for 3 years before the first day of the first year of your course
  • have been granted settled or pre-settled status under the EU settlement scheme and been living in UK and Islands for 3 years before the first day of the first year of your course

All of the above will also need to live in Wales on or before the first day of the first academic year of your course.

You can also have an eligible exception residency type such as a refugee, stateless person or humanitarian protection.

If you're not able to identify as a Welsh student’ you may still be eligible for funding as a European Union student.

European Union student

EU students are EU nationals from the European Union or a family member of an EU national and all the following apply:

  • you are not able to identify as a Welsh student
  • you have been granted pre-settled status under the EU settlement scheme (Irish citizens don’t need this)
  • you have lived in the UK, the EEA (including the Republic of Ireland), Switzerland or the Overseas Territories for the 3 years before the first day of the first academic year of your course
  • you will be studying in Wales

You can also have other residency types such as a being a family member of a Person of Northern Ireland or you are a UK National who is resident of Gibraltar.

If you're not able to identify as either a Welsh student or European Union student, you may not be eligible for funding from Student Finance Wales. Your university or college may be able to tell you about possible alternative sources of funding.
