Help with Living Costs

There are grants and loans available for part-time students to help with living costs.

COVID-19 update

Students having to study online from home in 2020 to 2021 rather than attending their course on campus at their university or college, will still be entitled to a Maintenance Loan and any grants they qualify for. Their student finance will be paid to them as normal, as if they were studying on site at their university or college.

If their circumstances have changed and they’ll now be living at home with parents rather than in their own accommodation, they’ll need to update their living location details in their online account. They’ll also need to update their application if they were supposed to be studying abroad this year but will now be staying in the UK to study online with their overseas provider.

Students need to make sure we have the correct information about where they’ll be living each term, otherwise they’ll have to repay any funding they have been overpaid. You can update this information by signing in to your online account now.

Welsh Government Learning Grant and Maintenance Loan

Students starting a course on or after 1 August 2018 can apply for a Welsh Government Learning Grant to help with their living costs, which doesn’t have to be paid back. How much they can get depends on their course intensity and household income.

Students can also apply for a Maintenance Loan. How much they can get depends on their course intensity and household income. To get a Maintenance Loan, students need to be under 60 on the first day of the first academic year of their course. The Maintenance Loan has to be paid back.

Students could get a total Welsh Government Learning Grant and Maintenance Loan of up to £5,433.75. It’s paid to the student in 3 instalments throughout each academic year.
