Help with living costs

There are grants and loans available for part-time students to help with living costs.

Welsh Government Learning Grant and Maintenance Loan

New students starting a course on or after 1 August 2018 can apply for a Welsh Government Learning Grant to help with their living costs, which doesn’t have to be paid back. How much they can get depends on their course intensity and household income.

Students can also apply for a Maintenance Loan. How much they can get depends on their course intensity and household income. To get a Maintenance Loan, students need to be under 60 on the first day of the first academic year of their course. The Maintenance Loan has to be paid back.

The Welsh Government Learning Grant is worked out first; the rest will be awarded as Maintenance Loan.

Students could get a total Welsh Government Learning Grant and Maintenance Loan of up to £4,987.50. It’s paid to the student in three instalments throughout each academic year.

The following table shows the total support available based on course intensity and household income.
