Courses starting after 1 August 2019
A Postgraduate Doctoral Loan helps towards course and living costs while studying a postgraduate Doctoral course. It’s paid directly to the student and isn’t based on their household income.
Students can borrow up to £25,700 during their postgraduate Doctoral course. The total amount they borrow will be paid evenly over the length of their course up to a maximum of £10,609 per year. For example, if they apply for the maximum amount of Postgraduate Doctoral Loan and study over four years, they’ll get £6,425 in each year of their course.
They can apply for a Postgraduate Doctoral Loan amount in any year of their course, but they might not get the maximum loan amount if they apply after their first year.
For example, if they begin a three-year doctoral degree but don’t apply for a Postgraduate Doctoral Loan until the second year of their course, the maximum they could get for each remaining year would be £10,609. This means the total for their whole course would be £21,218.
A Postgraduate Doctoral Loan may affect any benefits they currently receive.
Students who began their course in 2018/2019
Students who began their course in 2018/2019 can apply for a loan of up to £25,000.
