How can I get ALG?

female student

Dividing Line

To apply for ALG (FE), you need to:

  • think about what course(s) you want to do and where you want to study;
  • set up a bank or building society current account if you haven’t already;
  • complete the application form and send in your evidence;
  • wait for a letter saying you are accepted;

You will only get your payments once we get confirmation from your college that you are attending.

If your application is not accepted you will be sent a letter telling you why not.

Your course(s)

If you think your age and household income meet the conditions for ALG (FE), you then need to make sure your course(s) does. You must be studying at least 275 hours on your course(s) to be eligible, and your college must confirm that you are progressing on your course(s) for you to continue to get ALG (FE).

  • Your home address must be in Wales; and
  • You must be on a course(s) that leads to a nationally recognised qualification.

Eligible academic and vocational courses include, GCSE’s, ‘A’ Levels, BTEC, NVQ, GNVQ and Basic Skills courses.

You don’t need to know exactly what course(s) you will take when you apply, but the course(s) must be ‘eligible’.

Your college decides if your course is eligible. So although you may get a letter from us approving your application, your college may not confirm your course is eligible. This would mean you would not receive ALG (FE).
