Talking to someone on your behalf

The Data Protection Act prevents Student Finance Wales from discussing a student’s application for finance with any other party without their stated authority. This includes the parents or partners of a student, a legal representative or someone from their college or university.

However, many students find it useful to occasionally allow another person to call us on their behalf. This might be:

  • for an update on a student finance application
  • to act on your behalf to release or update information relating to their account

Providing Consent to Share

Consent to Share (CtS) is written or verbal authorisation which allows us to provide account information, with the exception of your bank details, to a third party you have nominated.

Please write, quoting your Customer Reference Number (formerly known as an ART ID), to the address below providing the following:

  • full name;
  • full address (including post code);
  • date of birth;
  • their relationship to the student;
  • a password;
  • how long this arrangement will be valid for, giving a date when it expires.

You must choose a password for the person who will be give Consent to Share. make sure they know what this is. You should make a note of this in case they forget.

Student Finance Wales will notify the person who has been nominated when they have Consent to Share.

Calling Student Finance Wales when you have Consent to Share

Each time you contact Student Finance Wales by phone, you will still need to give:

  • full name;
  • full address (including post code);
  • date of birth;
  • your relationship to the student;
  • the password chosen by the student.

The student must choose a password for you before you call. Make sure you take a note of what it is, and keep it in a safe place.


Power of Attorney

A Power of Attorney (PoA) is an official document where you can grant attorney to a third party to release or update information relating to your account. A PoA must contain

  • the specific periof for which they can act as an attorney; and
  • the specific tasks that they can perform.

As above, the person holding PoA must provide their name, address, date of birth, relationship and password when they call.
