The purpose of the Assembly Learning Grant for Further Education Scheme - ALG (FE)- is to encourage people aged 19 or over and living in Wales to continue with their education.
ALG (FE) is a payment of up to £1,500 if you are studying full time and up to £750 if you are part time. It is dependent on your household income. See How much can I get? to find out how these amounts will be worked out.
You can spend this money on whatever you want. It can help to cover day-to-day costs such as travel, books and equipment.
Who Can Get It?
Your Age
To get ALG (FE) you must be aged 19 or over.
This means that if you are studying in academic year 08/09 your date of birth must be on or before 1 September 1989.
*An academic year refers to the usual dates that schools and colleges run their courses from. An academic year starts on 1 September and ends 31 August.
Your Course
Your course must be at least 275 hours for you to get ALG (FE), be at a participating college, and lead to a nationally recognised qualification. Your course must also be ‘eligible’ for you to get ALG (FE). There are lots of courses that you could do, and get ALG (FE), such as:
- GCSEs;
- ‘A’ or ‘AS’ levels;
- BTEC, GNVQ, NVQ courses;
- Basic Skills courses
