How much does university or college cost?

All students will need to make sure that they’re well prepared and have thought about the full cost of going to university or college.

Tuition fees for new students

For new, full-time students starting their course at a public university/college from academic year 2012/13 onwards, the maximum tuition fee they can be charged is £9,000.

The student can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan (which needs to be paid back) and a Fee Grant (which doesn’t need to be paid back) to help pay the full cost of the tuition fees.

Tuition fees for continuing students

Depending on when the student started their course, they may be able to apply for a:

  • Tuition Fee Loan;
  • Tuition Fee Grant; or a
  • Fee Grant.

Living costs

There are many other costs associated with going to university, such as:

  • accommodation
  • food
  • clothing
  • books
  • travel expenses.

To help with these costs the student can apply for a Welsh Government Learning Grant (previously called Assembly Learning Grant), which doesn’t need to be paid back, and a Maintenance Loan, which does.

Accommodation costs

If the student has to move away from home, they should plan ahead and make sure that they’ve factored in accommodation costs. These can vary greatly and are one of the biggest expenses, especially if the student chooses to study in London and surrounding areas.

Extra help

There’s also extra help for students that have children, adult dependants or a disability.
