How much does university or college cost?

All students will need to make sure that they’re well prepared and have thought about the full cost of going to university or college.

Tuition fees for new students

For new full-time students starting their course at a public university or college, the maximum tuition fee they can be charged is £9,250.

The student can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan (which needs to be paid back) and a Fee Grant (which doesn’t need to be paid back) to help pay the full cost of the tuition fees.

The actual amount charged can vary depending on the student’s choice of university or college and course. Their university or college can confirm the exact amount that they will be charged for their chosen course.

Tuition fees for continuing students

The tuition fee support available to continuing students depends on when they started their course.

Living costs

There are many other costs associated with going to university, such as:

  • accommodation
  • food
  • clothing
  • books
  • travel expenses.

To help with these costs the student can apply for a Welsh Government Learning Grant, which doesn’t need to be paid back, and a Maintenance Loan, which does.

Accomodation costs

If the student has to move away from home, they should plan ahead and make sure that they’ve factored in accommodation costs. These can vary greatly and are one of the biggest expenses, especially if the student chooses to study in London and surrounding areas.

Extra help

There’s also extra help for students that have children, adult dependants or a disability.
