Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)

Key dates

June 2017 - Send your completed EMA application with original evidence
8 weeks - To be eligible for backdated payments you must apply within 8 weeks of the start of your course
31 August 2018 - The final date we can accept your application information and any evidence from you to be eligible for EMA in academic year 2017/18.

Do You Qualify For EMA?

EMA is for 16 to 18 year olds living in Wales, who want to continue their education after school leaving age. If you're eligible, you could get £30 a week, paid every two weeks.

Before you apply for EMA there are few things you will need to check to make sure you qualify.

  • Date of Birth - you must be 16-18 years old on 31 August 2017
  • Course - you must be studying at a participating school or college on an ‘eligible’ course
  • Household Income - this must be below a certain level to receive EMA
  • Nationality and Residency – If you are a UK citizen living in Wales you should be eligible for EMA.
